Item Determination of Nursing Students' Perceptions on Stem Cells(2021-10-01) Eren, Handan; Koç, Şerife; Gönültaş, MetinAim: This research was carried out to determine the perceptions of nursing students about stem cells. Method: The research was conducted with 276 nursing students studying at a state university. In the study, data were collected with the Descriptive Characteristics Form and the Stem Cell Perception Scale between February 01 and March 01, 2020. Data were analyzed with descriptive tests, Mann Whitney-U test, One-Way Analysis of Variance, Kruskal Wallis test and multiple lineer regression analysis in SPSS 23 statistical program. Results: The mean age of the students was 19.60±1.26 (min=18, max=25) and 79% were female. The stem cell perception scale mean score of the students is 66.84±6.88, and statistically significant difference was found between the age, the class they attend, their participation in the stem cell-themed scientific program, their knowledge about the cord blood bank and the Stem Cell Perception Scale mean score (p<0.05). Conclusion: Nursing students' perceptions of stem cells were found to be above the average. Since having scientific knowledge about stem cells will positively affect the perception of stem cells, it has been suggested to organize scientific programs related to stem cells in the nursing education curriculum and to increase the course content related to the subject in the education curriculum.Item Kemoterapi Alan Hastalarda Venöz Dolgunluk ve Görünürlüğü Sağlayıcı Teknikler(Dergipark, 2021-03-16) Bayram, Şüle Bıyık; Eren, Handan; Çalışkan, NurcanChemotherapy treatments are given for a long time through the peripheral intravenous damage the epithelial layer of the vessels. This situation causes many complications, affects the fullness and visibility of the vessels, and causes nurses to experience difficulties during peripheral intravenous catheter application. These difficulties may cause patients to experience pain, anxiety, and delay treatment. To prevent these conditions, the first step in peripheral catheter application is to provide vein visibility and venous fullness. For this purpose, there are different techniques such as tourniquet application or swelling of the sphygmomanometer by inserting the arm into the arm, keeping the arm below the heart level, isometric exercise application, tapping the vein with the fingertip, applying the vein and performing local hot application, using ultrasound and infrared rays. In clinics, it is seen that tourniquet, keeping the arm below the heart level and vein tapping techniques are frequently used. Studies on the use of other techniques are being conducted and the effect and technique of use are specified in patient groups receiving chemotherapy. Nurses’ knowledge of these techniques and their use in patients with vascular structure such as patient groups receiving chemotherapy will minimize these difficulties and complications. For this reason, the purpose of this article is to provide evidence-based information about the techniques that provide vein visibility and venous fullness in patients receiving chemotherapy, to attract nurses’ attention to this issue and to ensure that this information is put into practice.Item Nursing Students' Difficulties in Determining the Care Needs of Patients on Clinical Practice: A Qualitative Descriptive Study(2021-08-01) Eren, Handan; Sonay Turkmen, AyseBackground: Initiatives to determining the care needs of patients are gained to nursing students throughout education. However, little is known about the situation of the students applying these initiatives and the difficulties they have in clinical practicum. Objective: Our research was designed to explore nursing students' difficulties in determining the care needs of patients on clinical practice. Methodology: This was a descriptive qualitative study using the content analysis approach. The study was conducted in 2019 with 46 nursing students enrolled at a nursing school. The participants were selected through simple random sampling method and attended semi structured interviews and 4 focus groups. The data were interpreted using the method of content analysis. Results: Three main themes were created: the problems related to interviewing with patients, the problems related to the physical examination, and the proposed solutions for the problems experienced by the students during determining the care needs of patients. It is found that most of the students had problems in communicating and performing physical examinations on patients of the opposite sex. Conclusion: It was observed that the students had difficulties in both taking patient history during the patient interviews and performing the physical examination. Educators and nurses should perform more patient interviews, apply more physical examination methods together with the students during recording patient history and, public advertisements should be made regarding gender perception in nursing.
